New Balance Is Getting A Real Taste Of Why Online Reputation Management Is Important

With the entire globe enthralled by the online world, online reputation management has become a necessary tool for businesses. Reputation management involves influencing and controlling a business’ online reputation. Public relations are important to every business, and as New Balance is currently experiencing, bad press puts that reputation management to work.

New Balance recently made the mistake of making a political statement. According to the Stamford Advocate, the VP of Public Affairs made a statement in regards to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He stated that with Trump being elected as the new President, the company feels things are going to be going in the right direction.

The company was soon-after dubbed the “official brand of the Trump Revolution” by a Neo-Nazi website, and that was it. New Balance then became the brand for white supremacists, whether they liked it or not. Ex-customers have taken to the internet ever since, making videos and taking pictures of themselves trashing and even burning their New Balance sneakers.

This has obviously led to a slew of negative press, equaling some major consequences for the brand. This is completely bad news in the world of reputation management. A negative online source and take a company’s good reputation and turn it upside down, and very quickly.

Prior to the statement made by the VP of Public Affairs, the company was praised for its patriotic manufacturing practices and its ability to create quality footwear, while maintaining manufacturing presences in the U.S.

Suffice it to say, within one week, New Balance went from being a champion for the country to being the white supremacists’ choice of shoe. It doesn’t really matter whether the statement was taken out of context or over exaggerated. Online branding doesn’t involve a definition of “truth”. Online reputation has its own versions of truth.

For a company that on average is searched over 3 million times each month, this is a big deal. Now, New Balance needs to focus on some key strategies to get their online reputation back in order: They need to stop making statements; they’ve done enough of that. They need to take action and combat the statement by taking initiatives to combat racism. Lastly, they need to get a solid online reputation management plan in place and stick to it!
